5 Ex-Memphis Cops Plead Not Guilty In Tyre Nichols Death

- Five former Memphis Police Department officers charged in the death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who died days after he was beaten by police in January, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and other charges on Friday.
- The former officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jr. and Justin Smith also pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression in Shelby County Criminal Court.
- Nichols’ mother, RowVaughn Wells, and stepfather, Rodney Wells, were present during the arraignment hearing, as was their lawyer, civil rights attorney Ben Crump.
