Abbott Appoints Texas’ First ‘Border Czar’

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott appointed his state’s first “border czar,” during a news conference in San Benito, Texas, Monday.

  • Abbott chose Mike Banks, a former, long-time Border agent, who retired about 10 days ago.
  • Migration is now at a record high, the with U.S. Customs and Border Protection recording over  2.3 million migrant encounters in fiscal 2022.
  • Texas is among the southern U.S. border states hit the hardest economically by the migration, have to pay for the costs associated with the arrival of the migrants.
  • “Texas, we’re standing not idly by while the Biden administration refuses to enforce our immigration laws,” Abbott said.
