Afghan Refugee Faces Third Murder Charge in Muslim Killings In New Mexico

Man charged in the slayings of two Muslim men faces new charges in connection with recent fatal shooting of another man outside refugee resettlement agency

  • A grand jury Monday indicted Muhammad  in the three killings
  • Syed also a suspect in shooting death of a Muslim shop owner in November 2021, but he has yet to be charged in that case.
  • One victim, 27-year-old Afzaal Hussain, who had worked on the campaign of a New Mexico congresswoman, was fatally shot on  evening walk.
  • The 51-year-old Syed has denied involvement in the killings, which have shaken state’s Muslim community.
