American Tourists Among 70 Taken Hostage By Indigenous Group In Peru

  • An indigenous group protesting the lack of government action after a local oil spill has taken a group of 70 tourists hostage, including multiple Americans and Britons.
  • The tourists also include travelers from Spain, Switzerland, and France, and were captured on a riverboat in the Amazon rainforest in Peru.
  • According to a Facebook post, detainee Angela Ramirez wrote: “We spent the night here. We already have hardly no water to drink, the sun is shining very strong, there are babies crying, the youngest is only one month old, pregnant women, disabled people, and the elderly are on board.”
