Army Vet, Employee Killed In Fatal Grocery Store Attack Emerges As Hero

A Safeway employee in Oregon who had served in Army for two decades possibly preventing more casualties by subduing gunman.

  • Police have identified employee, veteran as 66-year-old Donald Ray Surrett Jr., of Bend, where incident occurred.
  • Surrett was killed in attack along with customer Glenn Edward Bennett, 84, also of Bend.
  • “Mr. Surrett engaged with the shooter, attempted to disarm him and may very well have prevented further deaths. Mr. Surrett acted heroically,”  police said Monday
  • Shooter died of self-inflicted gunshot wound, body found near AR-15-style weapon, police also said.
