As Many As 1,500 Detained After Brazilians Vandalize Capitol

Brazilian authorities said Monday they have detained an estimated 1,500 people in connection with the weekend attack of government buildings by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

  • The protest occurred Saturday, and the roughly 1,500 include those formally arrested in the vandalism and others detained for questioning, Brazil Minister of Justice Flávio Dino said Monday.
  • Bolsonaro was defeated in October in a presidential race by leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who responded to the incident Sunday by authorizing federal intervention.
  • Mobs protesting the country’s presidential election vandalized congressional buildings, Brazil’s high court and the presidential palace, which were mostly vacant at the time.
