What started as a night of celebrating the Little 500 on Kirkwood Avenue quickly turned into chaos when gunfire erupted, sending people running for cover.
By the end of the night, debris littered the street and at least nine people were injured.
According to the Bloomington Police Department, right before 12:30 a.m. Sunday, April 26, officers were stationed in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue monitoring a large crowd that had gathered in the street.
Police said they heard several gunshots and the crowds started scattering.
The Bloomington PD said officers found “multiple wounded individuals.”
Police said it’s not currently known how many people suffered direct gunshot wounds or if their injuries were a result of being hit by bullet fragments.
As of 3 a.m. Sunday, the Bloomington PD said five people were taken from the downtown area to local hospitals by ambulance, one person by a BPD squad car and two people by personal vehicles.
Police said another person was taken to a local hospital by ambulance from a gas station in the 200 block of West 17th Street with injuries believed to be related to the shooting on Kirkwood Avenue.
