Biden Signs Law Officially Nixing D.C. Bill Called ‘Too Soft On Crime’

  • President Biden on Monday signed into law a bill pass by Congress with strong bipartisan support to block a measure by District of Columbia lawmakers to update the city’s criminal code but that also relaxed penalties for some violent crimes.
  • D.C. City Council passed the measure veto override on Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser.
  • House Speaker Kevin McCarthy celebrated Biden’s signing Monday, saying House Republicans led the congressional effort to block the “soft-on-crime criminal code rewrite that treated violent criminals like victims and discarded the views of law enforcement.”
