CA Resident Sounds Alarm About Proposed Classroom Book

A resident of San Luis Obispo County, California sounded the alarm last week about a book under consideration for classroom use, claiming it shows a “racial bias against white people.”

“Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” by Mildred D. Taylor was listed by the Lucia Mar Unified School District as a possible “core novel” for middle school classes this year. The book is described as telling the story of a black family experiencing segregation in Mississippi in the 1930s.

Randy Poorman told the school board that he reviewed the book and found it inappropriate for middle schoolers.

“After reading it, I found myself hating almost every white character in this story,” he said. “The book focuses too much on the white-black dynamic instead of focusing on the content of a person’s character, rather than the color of their skin.”
