- The 69-year-old native of Ireland was fatally at about 1 p.m. Saturday inside of his Hacienda Heights neighborhood, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
- O’Connell, who served in the Los Angeles area for 45 years, was reportedly shot in the chest.

He was a peacemaker with a heart for the poor and the immigrant, and he had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life was honored and protected,” Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez said.
