Chicago’s Exodus Is About To Get Worse

Illinois has experienced a consistent outmigration trend for the past nine years, with more people leaving the state than moving in.

In 2022, a staggering 104,437 individuals relocated out of Illinois, continuing the pattern observed in the previous eight years, primarily concentrated in the state’s largest city, Chicago.

The ongoing population decline signals underlying issues within the state. However, the situation may potentially worsen due to the proposed tax plan put forth by Chicago’s newly elected mayor, Brandon Johnson. As part of his campaign agenda, Johnson has introduced a tax proposal designed to generate $800 million in additional revenue.
