China’s Commerce Ministry said Saturday that Beijing and Washington had reached a preliminary agreement to reduce some tariffs and to expand agricultural trade, the first official Chinese account of what this week’s summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping produced.
The ministry, in a statement posted on its website, described the tariff, farm, and aircraft understandings as preliminary and said they would be finalized as soon as possible, signaling that the headline outcomes of Trump’s state visit remain works in progress rather than settled deals.
It said the two sides had agreed to establish a trade board and an investment board to carry forward the talks. The trade board would negotiate reciprocal, product-specific tariff cuts, along with broader reductions on unspecified goods, including agricultural products.
The ministry added that both sides had agreed in principle to lower tariffs on products of mutual concern on an equivalent scale, without naming the products or setting a timeline.
The agriculture commitments were more detailed.
The ministry said the two governments would work to resolve or make substantive progress on non-tariff barriers and market access disputes affecting certain farm goods.
