According to an announcement on the website of Suzhou city, a 78-year-old U.S. citizen named John Shing-Wan Leung has been sentenced to life imprisonment in China on charges of espionage.
Leung, who is also a permanent resident of Hong Kong, was apprehended over two years ago by China’s counterintelligence agency.
His detention occurred amidst China’s implementation of strict domestic travel restrictions, border closures, and social controls aimed at combatting the spread of COVID-19.
