CIA Director Thinks Putin ‘Too Confident’ About Winning Ukraine War

CIA Director William Burns made the comment Sunday and said he got that perception of Putin during a conversation this past November in which he warned Russia's leader about the consequences of deploy a nuclear weapon in Ukraine.

  • Burns spoke on CBS-TV as the war in Ukraine enters its second year.
  • He said Putin is being “too confident” in his military’s ability to grind Ukraine into submission.
  • Burns also said that in this past fall’s meeting the head of Russia’s intelligence services displayed “a sense of cockiness and hubris” that reflected Putin’s beliefs that “he can make time work for him, that he believes he can grind down the Ukrainians that he can wear down our European allies, that political fatigue will eventually set in.”
