Colleges Rush To Settle Antisemitism Cases Ahead Of Trump Term

Many U.S. colleges are resolving cases of alleged antisemitism through settlements with federal civil rights investigators in the weeks leading up to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. These settlements aim to close investigations, but some colleges face unresolved cases that may lead to harsher penalties under Trump’s administration.

These settlements come amid growing tensions over antisemitism on U.S. college campuses, particularly following the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel. Republican lawmakers argue that these agreements, which often require policy updates and training, fail to hold colleges accountable. With Trump taking office, there is increasing pressure for stricter actions against schools accused of permitting antisemitism.

In recent weeks, several colleges, including the University of Washington, the University of California, Johns Hopkins, and Rutgers, have settled with the U.S. Department of Education to close investigations into antisemitism. These agreements, although voluntary, typically include requirements for training, policy reviews, and addressing past complaints. High-profile cases, including those involving Columbia and Cornell universities, remain unresolved and could face stricter scrutiny once Trump assumes office.

Trump has previously stated that colleges should end antisemitic propaganda or face the loss of federal funding and accreditation. His administration has not yet specified its response to ongoing probes.

More than 100 colleges and school districts are under investigation for antisemitism or Islamophobia following the Gaza conflict. Among them are prestigious institutions such as Yale, Princeton, Columbia, and Cornell.

The Department of Education investigates complaints under Title VI, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin. However, the department’s typical course of action is to negotiate voluntary settlements rather than pursue extreme measures such as revoking federal funding.
