Cuba Has Lowest Voter Turnout Since Start Of Communist Regime

The elections of delegates to the Municipal Assemblies of People's Power in Cuba on Sunday showed a record numbers of abstention, according to one analysis.

  • Over 31% of registered voters didn’t vote, according to the comparison of preliminary data present Monday by Alina Balseiro Gutiérrez, president of  the National Electoral Council.
  • Balseiro Gutiérrez found 5,728,220 Cuban men and women voted, which represents 68.58% of the national electoral roll.
  • The number purportedly presents the lowest percentage in any vote carried out during the communist regime.
  • “Preliminary results: 31.42% abstention, the highest in the last 63 years. 2,623,091 people did not turn out to vote,” reported Inventario, an independent data journalism project.
