Descendent Drops Suit To Save Calhoun Statue In SC
The American Heritage Association helped fund the suit – filed by descendants of John C. Calhoun, a former congressman and vice president – opposing the city of Charleston’s removal of Calhoun’s statue.

- The suit was one of two recently dropped in South Carolina over the removal of Confederate icons.
- The association filed a lawsuit opposing the removal of a Robert E. Lee Memorial Highway marker from the campus of a charter school in Charleston, and the renaming of an auditorium that had been named after Christopher Memminger, a treasury secretary of the Confederacy.
- Monument to Confederate Gen. Lee was removed in July 2021 and placed in storage.
- City of Charleston made a deal with the South Carolina State Museum to take the Calhoun statue.
