Experts Think Shooter Used ‘Classic Spy Gun,’ Single-Shot Special

UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson was likely shot using a Welrod or B&T VP9 pistol. Several reporters cited law enforcement to report that the weapon was most likely the Welrod – a classic spy gun first used in Word War II – with which the 50-year-old was shot down near Hamilton Hotel in Manhattan on Wednesday morning.

The New York Police Department, which is investigating the shooting, said that it was a targeted attack, but did not confirm the details of the weapon. Paulette Thomson, the wife of the deceased businessman, said that he had been receiving some threats over the past few weeks, but chose to travel to New York for an investor’s meet despite the threats.

Fox News reported Bill Melugin said in a post on X that the “bolt action, suppressed pistol first used in WW2” was likely used to assassinate Brian Thompson. He also provided the quote of a contact, who was ready to “bet his pension” that it was the Welrod.

“I’d bet my pension that this is the weapon that was used on the United CEO,” the source was quoted as saying by Melugin.” It’s very very quiet and requires manual cycling after each round fired. Top choice by pros for up-close, quiet work.”

Some gun enthusiasts on X also claimed that the weapon used in the attack was not a Welrod.

“A few commenters have posited that this may be a Welrod or B&T VP9 / Station 6 pistol. It is not,” gun-enthusiast Louis vil LeGun wrote. “In this picture you can see the suppressor is thicker than the slide. I also slowed down the video, you can see the slide attempting to cycle.”
