FBI’s National Crime Stats Lack Data From 40% Of Country

- The FBI’s latest national crime report for 2021 does not include data from nearly 40 percent of police departments across the country.
- Most departments in New York, California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Florida failed to report data.
- “I don’t think you could get national numbers, at least not useful national numbers, from this data,” Jacob Kaplan, a criminologist at Princeton University said earlier this year. “It’s going to be really hard for policymakers to look at what crime looks like in their own community and compare it to similar communities.”
