Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate James Fishback is proposing a statewide mandate requiring all public school students to wear uniforms, a move he says will promote discipline and order in classrooms.
In a recent social media post, Fishback outlined specific attire: white polos and khakis for boys, and knee-length dresses or pant suits for girls. The proposal marks a sharp cultural pivot in Florida’s education debate, where recent years have focused on curriculum content, parental rights, and school choice.
Fishback, a political newcomer and founder of the student debate organization Incubate Debate, has aligned himself with Governor Ron DeSantis’ conservative education agenda. While Florida does not currently have a statewide uniform mandate, individual school districts are allowed to implement dress codes or uniform policies.
Supporters of uniform policies often cite reduced peer pressure, improved school safety, and fewer classroom distractions. Critics argue that such mandates can suppress student expression and impose financial burdens on families, especially when gender-specific requirements are involved.
Fishback has not released details on how the policy would be implemented or funded. His campaign has faced scrutiny in recent weeks following media reports about past sexual misconduct allegations, which Fishback has denied.
