- On Tuesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed several gun-control bills into law, which includes measures aimed at increasing taxes on firearm and ammunition purchases in the state and prohibiting concealed carry in public spaces.
- The taxation legislation, scheduled to become effective in July 2024, will enforce an eleven percent excise tax on these items. The generated revenue will be allocated towards “school safety and violence prevention programs, including initiatives designed to prevent school shootings, enhance firearm investigations, decrease retaliatory violence, and disarm domestic abusers,” as outlined in a statement from the governor’s office.
- Notably, multiple gun-rights advocacy organizations have already aligned themselves with a Second Amendment challenge against the concealed-carry law.
