Good News, Treasury Says $80B From Hill Democrats Will Smooth Tax Filings

  • The 2023 tax filing season officially opened Monday and closes on April 18.
  • “The IRS answered too small a share of the total number of calls they received last year,” Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said in a statement released Monday. “These 5,000 new hires will … help address the continued elevation of call volumes we’ve experienced over the past two years.”
  • Millions of taxpayers are still waiting on their federal refunds.
  • Treasury officials also said Monday that the IRS had hired about 650 additional people to provide in-person support at taxpayer assistance centers.
  • Congressional Republicans and others have railed against the passage of the multi-billion bill, saying the money will go to hire 87,000 new IRS auditors who will target hardworking Americans.
  • The  first vote on legislation by the new Republican-controlled House was to approved a bill that would rescind nearly $80 billion for the Internal Revenue Service.
