On Thursday, Texas Representative Michael Cloud introduced the “You Own the Data Act” or YODA Act, a piece of legislation that would give users control over their personal data.
Under the proposed law, companies would be prohibited from collecting data without user consent and would be required to provide updates to users on the data that is being collected and where it is being shared. The bill would also create a private right of action for individuals to sue companies that violate the provisions of the bill.
This would allow individuals to seek relief from companies that earn an annual gross revenue of $50 million or more.
