Harvey Weinstein Returns To New York For New Trial

Harvey Weinstein is heading back to court in New York for a new trial over sex crimes after his previous conviction was overturned.

The former Hollywood mega-producer is poised to appear in a New York City courtroom on Tuesday for the start of his retrial.

The trial comes nearly a year after New York’s highest court overturned the 73-year-old Hollywood figure’s 2020 rape and sexual assault conviction, ruling that the judge who presided over the case made “egregious errors.”

New York’s state Court of Appeals ruled at the time that Judge James Burke prejudiced Weinstein by allowing women to testify on allegations that were not part of the case.

Weinstein had been sentenced to 23 years in prison after being found guilty of a criminal sexual act and third-degree rape.

In addition to the New York case, Weinstein was sentenced to 16 years in prison by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge after being convicted of sexual assault charges in a 2022 trial. A woman who testified at the trial in California said that Weinstein assaulted her in her hotel room during a film festival. He was acquitted of sexual battery against one woman and no verdict was reached by the jury on charges related to interactions with two other women.
