EPA Halts Shipping Toxic Derailment Waste To Other States

  • Federal environmental authorities on Saturday ordered a temporary halt in the removal of contaminated waste from the site of a train derailment earlier this month in East Palestine, Ohio, near the state’s Pennsylvania line.
  • The Environmental Protection Agency said it has ordered Norfolk Southern to “pause” shipments from the site of the fiery Feb. 3 derailment but that the process would resume soon.
  • The rail company had until Friday had sole responsibility for the disposal of the waste.
  • The EPA said the halt follows concerns from residents and others in several states about the transport of some of this waste over long distances and finding the appropriate permitted  sites to take the waste.
