House Democrat: Iran In ‘Better Position’ Today Than Before War

Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) on Tuesday said Iran is in a “better position” than it was before the U.S.-Israeli conflict against Iran started on Feb. 28.

Moulton, an outspoken critic of the war, told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that Iran has “the willingness to endure the pain and stick this out.”

“They are in a better position today than they were before this war started,” he continued. “I mean, remember what was happening right before Trump started his war of choice. We were negotiating with the Iranians to curtail their nuclear weapons program. We were asking them to cut back on their nuclear weapons development.”

President Trump pulled the U.S. out of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2018, during his first term. The deal, penned during the administration of former President Obama, required the Islamic Republic to dismantle its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

The U.S. and Iran held negotiations over the nuclear program leading up to the U.S. and Israeli strikes that started on Feb. 28. Those negotiations fell apart amid rising tensions and Trump’s condemnation of the Iranian leadership during its crackdown on anti-government protests.
