Husband Of Incoming, Pro-Immigration Democrat Congresswoman Is ‘Dreamer’

A top early priority for Illinois Rep-elect Delia Ramirez, a pro-immigration reformer, will be to try to save from deportation her own husband – a DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, recipient.

  • Ramirez recently made an emotional Capitol Hill plea for support for the Obama-era implemented DREAM Act.
  • The original bipartisan DREAM Act – or Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act – was introduced in 2001 by Democrat Sen. Dick Durbin and Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch.
  • The law was renewed in 2019 by Durbin with help from GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham.
  • Prominent Republicans who have supported the bill but it has been staunchly opposed by others such as Sen. Tom Cotton who believe the legislation would take jobs away from U.S. born citizens and those immigrants who entered the country legally.
