With Sunday marking International Women’s Day around the globe, human rights activists tell NewsNation Iranian women are feeling excited and hopeful about the potential overthrow of the Islamic regime in the country.
Their comments come as Iran is in an ongoing conflict with the U.S. and Israel after the country refused to strike a deal over a nuclear weapon. Before the conflict began, an uprising of protests was sparked in the country, which saw more women activists being targeted and killed for demonstrating.
“They’re thrilled because Iranians in occupied Iran, they don’t see this as a war … they see this as liberation,” human rights activist Goldie Ghamari told NewsNation.
The Islamic regime in the country has occupied and suppressed women for the past 47 years. By the 1980s, women were forced to wear the hijab regardless of their preference. If they disobeyed, they were punished ranging from citations to jail time to even death.
“So think about France during World War Two, when they were being liberated by the Allies, when they were under Nazi occupation … it’s the exact same thing. So the very few messages that I’m receiving from women in occupied Iran is that they’re very grateful to President Trump in the United States, they’re grateful to Israel because this is not a war between the United States and Iran.”
Attorney Elica Le Bon supported Ghamari’s remarks, adding that the enthusiasm from the women is finally receiving the promise they were given when Ayatollah Ali Khamenei first came into power.
