- The IRS has paid more than $1 billion to more than 1.1 million prisoners, including 163,000 who are serving life sentences with no possibility of parole.
- The IRS admitted the payments in a letter to Republican Rep Don Bacon of Nebraska.
- Bacon: “The American Rescue Plan was reckless in the amount of massive spending with no off-sets. Giving stimulus checks to death row inmates is a glaring example. This bill triggered the worst inflation in 41 years, costing the average family $500 a month. The poor suffer the most.”
- The IRS said prisoners are still eligible for COVID stimulus checks.
