  • In 2022, California granted $1.7 million in state funds to build a standard single public bathroom using the rate given by the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
  • After public outrage over the cost, two men offered to donate a public toilet and do all of the construction work. After that offer was accepted, the city went ahead with the original plan to spend $1.7 million to build a second toilet.
