Hurricane Francine has been downgraded to a Category 1 storm at about 6 p.m. Wednesday, shortly after making landfall near Morgan City, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Francine is forecast to bring storm surge, damaging winds and potential flooding to south Louisiana. Residents are advised to stay inside and away from windows.
Gov. Jeff Landry has issued a state of emergency, and several parishes have issued evacuation orders.
