Mace Files Amendment To Implement Voter ID Ahead Of 2026 Midterms

Rep. Nancy Mace (R‑S.C.) announced Monday that she has filed an amendment to the SAVE America Act that would accelerate the implementation of federal voter ID requirements, moving the effective date up to cover elections held on or after Nov. 1, 2026.

The underlying bill, which is separate from the similarly named SAVE Act, establishes nationwide identification standards for federal elections.

In a statement accompanying the amendment, Mace said she and other supporters believe the identification provisions should take effect before the 2026 midterm elections rather than in 2027, as outlined in the original legislation.

She argued that the earlier timeline is necessary to address what she described as ongoing concerns about election integrity.

“We strongly support the SAVE America Act, but voter ID cannot wait until 2027,” Mace said in the announcement.

She added that the upcoming midterms will be “vital,” with control of Congress at stake, and said the amendment is intended to ensure that new verification rules are in place ahead of those contests.
