Planned Parenthood’s Manhattan location will no longer provide abortions at 20-plus weeks beginning next month, citing financial issues, The City reported.
The Manhattan chapter also said it will stop offering deep sedation for patients seeking to be put under for inserting intrauterine devices for birth control and surgical abortions, according to The City.
Abortion in New York is legal up to 24 weeks or longer if the health of the mother or baby is at risk.
Planned Parenthood said the state’s failure to increase Medicaid reimbursement rates has put a financial strain on the organization. More than 50% of patients at Planned Parenthood health centers rely on Medicaid, the organization told the city.
The Manhattan location contracts out for procedures requiring anesthesia and covers 100% of vendors’ contract costs, but said it cannot continue without sacrificing other essential patient services.
Planned Parenthood’s Manhattan clinic was the only one in New York that offered abortions after 20 weeks, though the organization said other abortion providers in the city will be able to serve patients during this time.
