A groundbreaking brain surgery performed by doctors in the womb has successfully saved a baby from a deadly genetic disorder.
Derek and Kenyatta Coleman, a couple from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, were thrilled when they discovered that they were expecting their third child. The pregnancy appeared to be normal, with unremarkable biophysical profiles and low risk according to genetic testing.
However, the baby was diagnosed with spina bifida, a serious condition that can cause paralysis, intellectual disability, and other complications. Thanks to the first-of-its-kind surgery, the baby is now thriving and expected to lead a normal life.
