- Nebraska Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts wants to be appointed to the seat currently held by retiring Sen. Ben Sasse.
- Sasse, first elected in 2014, announced in October that he was retiring to take a job running the University of Florida.
- In order to ascend to the Senate, Ricketts would have to be appointed by Republican Gov.-elect Jim Pillen, who will take office on Jan. 5.
