  • Retired Coast Guardsman Kris Heilman is a passionate hunter who wanted to retire in Alaska because it’s a hunter’s paradise. He did just that at the beginning of 2022 when he moved to Kodiak Island. In September, he shot his first Kodiak bear, but he could never have imagined it going down the way it did.
  • During a terrifying ordeal, Heilman shot the bear in his neighbor’s house from a few feet away with a 12-gauge slug to the head — through a wooden door in the middle of the night during a storm.
