Paul Moves To Declassify Documents Supporting COVID Lab Leak

Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul on Monday called for the declassification the documents that led Energy Department scientists to recently conclude the COVID-19 pandemic likely started as the result of a leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.

  • Paul tweeted Monday: “Classified documents leaked (they should be declassified!) showing scientists at DOE believe COVID leaked from Wuhan Lab.”
  • Included in the post was a link to the Wall Street Journal article this past weekend detailing the Energy Department’s conclusion in support of the lab leak theory.
  • The department reportedly changed its position after a Senate minority report from October 2022 detailed “substantial evidence” in support of the leak theory.
  • The FBI’s position also is that the virus was accidentally leaked from the lab, but the U.S. intelligence community remains divided, with some saying it likely naturally jumped from animals to human, perhaps at a wet market in the city of Wuhan, as China officials initially said.
