Pearl Harbor Attack Survivors Return After 82 Years

  • After completing a shower and donning a fresh sailor’s uniform, Ira “Ike” Schab closed his locker on the USS Dobbin when he heard a call for a fire rescue party.
  • Upon reaching the topside, Schab witnessed the USS Utah capsizing and Japanese planes in the air. Reacting swiftly, he returned below deck to retrieve boxes of ammunition and joined fellow sailors in a daisy chain, delivering shells to an anti-aircraft gun above. Despite his 140-pound frame as a 21-year-old, Schab summoned the strength to lift boxes nearly twice his weight.
  • Reflecting on those harrowing moments, now at the age of 103, Schab, residing in Beaverton, Oregon, with his daughter, recollects the profound sense of startlement and fear among the crew. “We didn’t know what to expect, and we knew that if anything happened to us, that would be it,” he remarked.
