Police Department Will No Longer Share Victim’s Gender To Avoid ‘Misgendering’

- The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) declared on Wednesday that it would cease disclosing a victim’s gender, citing concerns about “misgendering,” following pressure from LGBT advocates.
- The department disclosed that it would no longer include a victim’s race in information released on a proactive basis. It’s important to clarify that these policy adjustments pertain exclusively to proactive information sharing and will not affect open records or crime statistics.
- These changes will not be applicable to information concerning crime suspects. Heather Hough, the Chief of Staff for MPD, characterized this policy revision as a measure intended to protect the dignity and privacy of all crime victims.
