Rep. Comer Easily Wins In Kentucky GOP Primary Race

Rep. James Comer, chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, easily won the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 1st Congressional District.

Newsmax and Decision Desk HQ called the race for Comer, who is seeking a sixth term. With about 17% of the vote counted, Comer had 88.4%, followed by David Sims with 5.7% and two other candidates.

Comer is expected to be a heavy favorite against Democrat Drew Williams in November’s general election. In 2024, President Donald Trump won Comer’s district, which stretches from western Kentucky into central Kentucky, with 73% of the vote.

Comer has not received less than 74% of the vote in any election in the 1st Congressional District except in 2018, when he won with 68.6%.

Comer reportedly is planning to run for Kentucky governor in 2027, with term-limited Democrat Gov. Andy Beshear unable to seek a third term.

Comer, a former Kentucky agriculture commissioner and state legislator, previously ran for governor in 2015. He lost the Republican primary to Matt Bevin by just 83 votes. Bevin later served one term before losing to Beshear in 2019.
