Republican South Dakota State Senator John Carley Reportedly Missing

Republican Sen. John Carley was absent from the Senate Chamber on Tuesday, leading to a call from the governor and security checking cameras and the parking lot for his whereabouts.

Carley was last seen in the Capitol around 11:30 a.m. on the Senate floor.

“They’ve searched all the offices in the building and have not found him,” a report from the Senate sergeant in arms said.

A call of the house was ordered during Tuesday’s Senate floor hearing because of Carley’s unexplained and unexcused absence.

A call of the house means members of the chamber vote to compel a legislator to attend the floor meeting. According to the Legislative Joint Rules, once a call of the house is ordered, the doors must be closed and no member can leave the room until permission is given by the presiding officer of the floor session. In this case, it would be Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen.
