New Threat To Restaurants: Natural Gas Bans

California, New York take steps to restrict natural gas-powered appliances

  • Chefs and restaurant owners, who worry that bans on gas stoves will raise costs and change the way cuisines are prepared, are concerned about restrictions on natural gas-powered appliances.
  • Preemption laws that prohibit future bans on natural gas are in effect in 21 states. However, more than 60 cities in California are working toward phasing out natural gas-powered appliances and New York and other states are taking similar steps.
  • Jot Condie, president and CEO of the California Restaurant Association said, “It’s spreading pretty quickly.”
