Xi Jinping, China’s most powerful leader in decades, on Sunday was officially named leader of the country's ruling Communist Party.

- In advance of officially being named, Xi Jinping has promoted allies who support his plan for tighter control over the county and its struggling economy.
- China has the world’s second-largest economy, behind only the U.S.
- Xi is China’s most powerful leader in decades.
- He came into power in 2012 and on Sunday awarded a third, five-year term as general secretary, breaking tradition in which his predecessor left after 10 years.
