Scott, A Former Fla. Gov., Nosing Into Ian Evacuations

Florida GOP Sen. Rick Scott, who was the state's previous governor, said Sunday that he wants to know more about timing of evacuations in Lee County, where Hurricane Ian made landfall, causing catastrophic damage.

  • Scott made the statement on CNN, four days after Ian hit Florida as a Category 4 hurricane.
  • Scott said officials are “going to look and find out” why Lee County issued an evacuation order just 24 hours before the storm hit.
  • Roughly half of all storm-related deaths in Florida are reportedly in Lee County, which reported 35 fatalities on Saturday.
  • The total death toll in the state has ranged from about 48 to as high as 77.
  • Lee County, which includes Fort Myers and Cape Coral, reportedly did not issue a mandatory evacuation order until Tuesday morning for the areas expected to be hardest hit, while other counties had already issued such orders.
