Some high profile public school organizations no longer use Elon Musk’s social media platform X.
The president of a national teachers union shut down her association’s X account in January.
On Jan. 13, Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, posted, “It’s time to let X/Twitter go. This platform’s decline from a vibrant public square to what is now a platform for hate, disinformation & manipulation has been painful to experience. Find me & the AFT on Bluesky, Substack, Threads, Instagram, or Facebook.”
Bluesky Social was founded by Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter.
AFT Michigan, the state chapter of the national teachers’ union, had its last post on X in December 2023. Detroit Federation of Teachers-Local 231 – the union for Detroit’s teachers – lasted posted on X in June 2022.
Detroit Public Schools Community District’s (DPSCD) Nikolai Vitti stopped posting on X on his personal account in March 2025. DPSCP’s last post on X was in November 2025.
