When Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a member of the Democratic House club known as “The Squad,” called Israel an “apartheid state,” Twitter’s fact check jumped into action.
“Speaker McCarthy wants to rewrite history but the apartheid state of Israel was born out of violence and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians,” Tlaib said on Twitter Monday. “75 years later, the Nakba continues to this day.”
Twitter did an instant fact check. “Israel was born out of UN General Assembly Resolution 181,” one check said. “‘Ethnic cleansing’ affected both Jewish and Arab communities caught up in the war initiated by 5 Arab states who opposed the existence of Israel,” said another.
