Tennessee GOP Gov. Lee Drops $54M On Police Recruiting, Training

Tennessee GOP Gov. Bill Lee this past weekend said he's allocating$54 million in state funds to recruit more police officers, as law enforcement agencies across the country face challenges in filling vacancies.

  • Roughly $24 million will be spent to support basic training for new police officers.
  • “To stay ahead of the nationwide spike in crime, Tennessee is taking every step to recruit, train and retain highly-qualified law enforcement officers to keep our communities safe,” Lee said Friday. “I’m confident these additional measures will strengthen public safety and relieve financial burdens for local law enforcement agencies.”
  • The other $30 million will go toward recruiting new police hires and helping local law enforcement agencies give 3,000 recruitment bonuses.
  • Earlier this week, Lee announced a massive investment in violent crime prevention.
