Yellen: ‘You Don’t Have A Recession’ When Unemployment At 53-Year Low

Janet Yellen made the comment Monday, three days after the Labor Department's January unemployment reported showed the U.S. economy that month created over 500,000 new jobs and the jobless rate dropped to 3.4%.

  • Yelllen acknowledged that inflation still remains too high but said she saw a path for avoiding a recession.
  • She pointed to inflation coming down significantly and the economy remaining strong, considering the strength of the U.S. labor market.
  • “You don’t have a recession when you have 500,000 jobs and the lowest unemployment rate in more than 50 years,” Yellen said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “What I see is a path in which inflation is declining significantly and the economy is remaining strong.”
