President Trump defended his comments pushing back on Pope Leo XIV’s statements against the Iran war, saying he has a right to disagree with the pontiff and that he felt no need to meet to iron out their differences.
“I have a right to disagree with the pope. I have no disagreement with the fact the pope can say what he wants, and I want him to say what he wants, but I can disagree,” he said, departing the White House for a trip to Nevada to hold a roundtable.
The president also reiterated that he likes Leo’s brother, Louis Prevost, who is a Trump supporter.
“He’s actually a great guy,” he said of Prevost. “And I’m sure the pope is a great guy. I haven’t met him, but I disagree with the pope.”
“I’m all about the Gospel,” Trump said. “But I can’t allow, as president of the United States of America, I can’t allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”
