President Trump’s federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department ended after 30 days on Wednesday, but the National Guard and federal agencies will remain in Washington, D.C., at least through November.
House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed that he will not try to extend Trump’s takeover, meaning authority over MPD will return to Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser, WJLA reported. However, the Republican-controlled Congress will also be considering over a dozen bills that would give the legislative branch more authority over the city.
The Trump administration has touted that more than 2,000 arrests have been made since the federal takeover of the capital began last month.
